The 56th Annual World Championship Dainty Contest lands on its traditional last Monday in July date in the historic Schnitzelburg neighborhood, and if you've never seen it, you're in for something truly one of a kind. Dainty is a German street game dating back to the early 1800s and revived here in 1971. Players use a whittled broomstick to tap a small wooden peg airborne, then swing again to launch it down the street, and the furthest hit gets crowned world champion. One catch: contestants have to be at least 45 to compete.

Expect bologna sandwiches, ragtime music, a beer garden, and hundreds of neighbors packed along the sidewalk beside Hauck's. It all kicks off with the National Anthem. Genuinely unlike anything else, deeply local, and completely free. If you want a story to tell, go to this.

The 6th annual Frazier Summer Beer Fest is going all out for America's 250th, and it's the perfect Saturday night send off to July. We're talking over 250 specialty beers from 80+ local, regional, and out of state breweries, plus live music, food, and plenty of Kentucky pride at one of the most iconic venues on Whiskey Row. VIP gets you into the Gateway Garden, inside the Frazier History Museum itself, and access to indoor restrooms.

Best part? Proceeds support the museum's exhibitions and educational programs, so you're drinking for a good cause. Grab a group, pace yourself through those 250 pours, and toast to a great summer.

Calling all food lovers. The 17th annual Kentuckiana EggFEST brings two days of tastings, competitions, and fun, with every single dish cooked on Big Green Egg grills. Friday night is the all you can eat People's Choice Competition where you vote for the best team, plus a "Chopped" style showdown among three pro chefs given 90 minutes and a box of mystery ingredients, with a free Maker's Mark bourbon tasting and West 6th beer available. Saturday brings Best Beef, Best Pork, and Best Dessert competitions from amateur cooks, plus all the food you can eat.

The best part is where your money goes: proceeds benefit Kentucky Harvest and A Recipe to End Hunger, and over 16 years this event has raised nearly $450,000 to feed people in need.

One logistics note: skip Brownsboro Road due to construction and take the free shuttle from St. Matthews Episcopal Church instead.

One of Louisville's most beloved free traditions is back for another month. WFPK's favorite concert series returns to the waterfront on July 29th with performances by Over the Rhine and Abby Hamilton, so grab your lawn chairs and settle in for a night of music. This one marks the 24th season of Waterfront Wednesday, and it never gets old: three live acts, food trucks, and those unbeatable riverfront sunset views.

Bring a blanket, grab a bite, and post up on the Big Four Lawn for a perfect midweek reset by the river. Free, easy, and exactly the kind of night this city does best.
